Born in Sparta, Wisconsin, George Alva made his family life in Oakes, North Dakota. The compilation records his 1907 marriage to Ruth Amos Eaton and their seven children. His surviving letters bring the dates into focus: railway journeys, work away from home, care for his mother, and a repeated longing to be with Ruth.
